Another Death In GSMNP

Another Death In GSMNP Another death in GSMNP has occurred.This is the second death in the last week that has taken place in the national park.  A 56-year-old man may have drowned in Abrams Creek. His body was found by park rangers about 1-2  miles from the Abrams Falls trailhead. He was found and his body was recovered on Saturday. The official cause of death has not been released. Another Ramsey Cascades Waterfall Death

Another Ramsey Cascades Waterfall Death From Fall There has been another Ramsey Cascades waterfall death from a fall. An unidentified man has died after falling about 80 feet from the Ramsey Cascades waterfall in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The 37-year-old man was hiking in the area and was witnessed walking across the top of the waterfall before he fell. By the time park rangers arrived to the scene the man was dead. High Wind Warning Closes GSMNP

High Wind Warning Closes GSMNP Yesterday the park service closed the Great Smoky Mountain National Park due to a high wind warning. The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning in the early hours of Thursday May 5, 2017. As a front moved through the area winds f 35-55 mph were expected with possible gust up of more than 80mph. Due to the risk of downed trees, tree branches and power lines the park service closed the national park. Synchronous Fireflies 2017 Dates In GSMNP

Park Service Announces Synchronous Fireflies 2017 Dates The dates for the synchronous firefly 2017 event at Elkmont this summer are May 30 – June 6, 2017. During these dates the shuttles will run taking those with tickets to Elkmont campgrounds each evening for the firefly viewing event. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park service has announced it will again use the online lottery system for tickets to the annual synchronous firefly event at Elkmont this summer. Gatlinburg Fire Damage Reports 11/30/16  8:30PM Update: There have now been 7 deaths as a result of the fires in the Gatlinburg area. Over 700 structures have been affected. More rain arrived this morning but some areas are still smoldering. Our ride thru Wears Valley made the devastation real. Many homes burned to the ground, trees down, power lines down. Chimney Tops Fire in GSMNP Spreads The Chimney Tops fire in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is spreading due to the high winds as a front moves toward the mountains bringing  rain tomorrow. The fire area now covers almost 500 acres. The Chimney 2 fire is burning in the Chimney Tops and Bullhead Ridge area. Multiple Fires In NC Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains Nearby fires in NC mountains and in the Great Smoky Mountains have closed many trails and other areas. Several trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have been temporarily closed due to fires and smoke. One trail is Chimney Tops Trail because of a wildfire burning near the trail summit.
