This scenic byway has some of the best mountain scenery in the area. This 43-mile National Scenic Byway through the Cherokee and Nantahala national forests stretches between Tellico Plains, Tennessee, and Robbinsville, North Carolina.
It winds up and over 5,400-foot mountains for 18 miles in North Carolina and 23 miles in Tennessee. The road crosses through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests. The name comes from the combination of Cherokee and Nantahala, “Chero…hala”. From Tellico Plain, TN to the TN/NC state line the road is marked 165. At the TN/NC state line in NC, the road turns into 143 to Robbinsville.

It takes about 2 hours to get from Tellico Plains to Robbinsville with no stops. Make sure to check for any road closures or weather conditions before embarking on your journey.
Be Prepared: The Skyway can be quite deserted at night. In winter the skyway can be extremely dangerous due to winter weather hazards. There are no public facilities other than a couple of restrooms for the entire 43 miles. Plan in advance and fuel up, make sure you have enough gas to make the 43 miles.

Nearby Attractions: Add to your adventure by exploring nearby attractions. Visit the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, known for its ancient trees. Head to Cherokee and take Newfound Gap Road (441) into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to see even more natural wonders. Visit Fontana Dam. Fontana Dam is located on NC Highway 28 near the Fontana Dam and the Little Tennessee River. Visit Lake Santeetlah in Graham County, just 6 miles northwest of Robbinsville. The lake is nestled inside the Nantahala National Forest.
