Earthquake In The Great Smoky Mountains!

An Earthquake Rumbles in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park A rare earthquake occurred in the Great Smoky Mountains on Wednesday Feb. 25, 2015 just a few minutes after  4:00am. The earthquake was a 2.1 magnitude and was felt in an area near Clingmans Dome  located about 7 miles south of Gatlinburg, TN.   Only two other earthquakes have occurred in the park, all minor. One was in 1979 at 3.2 magnatude and one in 2011 at 2.5 magnitude. Minor earthquakes like these cause no damage but can be felt. It has been a winter to remember for the park….

Nawger Nob Arts and Crafts Fair in September

The two day Nawger Nob Arts & Crafts Fair is Saturday and Sunday September 27 and 28, 2014 in Townsend, TN this year.  The craft fair takes place at Nawger Knob Shopping Area with the tents under the shade of the trees. Indiana Man Suffers Head Injuries in Fall at The Sinks Swimming Hole in Great Smoky Mountains

A man sustained head injuries after he fell climbing on rocks at The Sinks swimming hole in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park yesterday August 4, 2014. The 21 year old man is from Indiana and is Michael Taylor Noblitt. He fell from a 10 foot bank and hit a rock below at the smimming hole located off Little River Road. He was taken from the site of the accident by ambulance to a nearby area used as an emergency landing zone, then he was transported by Lifestar to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville. Hiker Rescued in Great Smoky Mountains National Park After Falling

A hiker rescued from a popular trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is recovering. The man was hiking on Mt. LeConte (near Gatlinburg, TN) and suffered a fall and a back injury while hiking on Alum Cave Trail on Sunday. Park Rangers reached the man about 2 hours after his fall, but due to severe storms Sunday night they were unable to remove him from the site. Great Smoky Mountains Artist Lee Roberson Jr. Dies

The well-known artist of the Great Smoky Mountains, Lee Roberson, died last month. He was 79 years old at the time of his death. He had an art gallery near Townsend, TN that was located on Wears Valley Road. The Roberson Gallery was a staple of the Smoky Mountains tourist with more than 2 million tourists visiting the gallery. Many tourist stopped at the gallery located between Pigeon Forge and Townsend. US Highway 441 a Nice Drive This Time of Year

US Highway 441 between Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC is a great drive this time of year. The highway goes right through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and connects North Carolina and Tennessee. With the trees turning green and the wild flowers blooming this is a great time to enjoy a ride through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Great Smoky Mountain National Park to Build a Collections Preservation Center in Townsend

Townsend, TN just south of Pigeon Forge is getting a Collections Preservation Center.Townsend is the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The $4.3 million center will be built at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center. Construction will begin this year and open in 2015. The Park Archives Center will be a 13,000 sq foot building and will be used to house documents and artifacts from the region that relate to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The 24th Annual Wilderness Wildlife Week 2014 is Jan. 25- Feb. 1, 2014 in Pigeon Forge, TN at the LeConte Center at 2986 Teaster Lane. Snow Causes Multiple Road Closings in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Snow and ice conditions in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have lead to the closure of many roads in the area. The counties of NC and TN in the mountain regions are under a wind and wind chill weather advisory. Temperatures are in the mid teens with winds 15 mph with gust to 25 mph ins some areas. State of NC Not Likely to Get Money Back Used to Reopen GSMNP During Govt. Shutdown

NC spend $15,000 to reopen the Great Smoky Mountains National Park during the government shutdown in October and a spokesman for the Governor says the state probably will not get that money back from the federal government. Tennessee spent $60,00 to reopen the park. Congress would have to pass legislation to repay all the states in the US that used their won money to reopen National Parks during the shutdown. This would be more than $3.5 million  that would have to be repaid to the combined states.
