Winter Storm Warning and Snow in the Forecast-Ski Resorts to Open

Winter Storm Warning for the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina and Ski Resorts Opening

More snow is expected in the Great Smoky Mountains Wednesday and Thursday. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect tonight and Wednesday. Just a few inches for  Wednesday,  but 3-6 inches is predicted for Thanksgiving Day. Travel may be hazardous on Thanksgiving Day in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Accumulating snow in elevations over 3500 feet is possible.

Several snow ski resorts and snow tubing parks will be open this weekend. Beech Mountain and Cataloochee will be open this weekend. With snow in the forecast and conditions right for snow making the ski resorts and snow tubing parks should be a great place to spend some time on the slopes after celebrating Thanksgiving with family and friends.

...ACCUMULATING SNOWFALL EXPECTED ACROSS MUCH OF THE NORTH 
CAROLINA MOUNTAINS TONIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY... 
 
.A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM DEVELOPING OFF THE SOUTHEAST COAST THIS 
EVENING WILL MOVE NORTHWARD ALONG THE COAST OF THE CAROLINAS 
OVERNIGHT. MOISTURE WILL SPREAD NORTHWEST OVER THE REGION AHEAD OF 
THIS LOW...WITH LIGHT RAIN DEVELOPING LATE THIS EVENING. THE 
PRECIPITATION WILL CHANGE OVER TO SNOW ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS AND 
INTENSIFY DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS...WITH MAINLY SNOW EXPECTED 
FOR THE BULK OF THE STORM ALONG THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS...AND SNOW 
WITH PERIODS OF A RAIN AND SNOW MIX IN THE LOWEST MOUNTAIN 
VALLEYS. SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED OVERNIGHT 
THROUGH AT LEAST WEDNESDAY...MAINLY AT ELEVATIONS ABOVE 3500 FEET 
IN THE NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS.

* TIMING...RAIN WILL INCREASE LATE THIS EVENING...MIXING WITH AND 
CHANGING TO SNOW LATE. THE SNOWFALL WILL INCREASE IN INTENSITY 
OVERNIGHT. SNOW IS EXPECTED TO TAPER OFF FROM THE SOUTHWEST 
THROUGH LATE WEDNESDAY MORNING. 
 
* ACCUMULATIONS...SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 1 TO 3 INCHES...WITH THE 
HIGHEST AMOUNTS ALONG THE HIGHER RIDGE TOPS. 
 
* WINDS...NORTHWEST 5 TO 10 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 20 MPH. 
 
* IMPACTS...SNOW ACCUMULATING ON HIGH ELEVATION ROADS COULD 
RESULT IN HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. 
 
* TEMPERATURES...IN THE LOWER TO MIDDLE 30S.
