Cades Cove Loop Road Closed For Repaving

Just a reminder that Cades Cove Loop Road is closed for repaving until September 27, 2021. The road is closed to all types of traffic including motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and horseback riders. The project started on September 7 and will last until September 27, 2021. The loop road should reopen just in time for the arrival of all the fall foliage viewers that arrive in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The much-needed project will include resurfacing the 11-mile loop road. Cades Cove Loop Road gets about 2 million visitors a year. That’s a lot of wear and tear over the years. Add to the heavy traffic the extreme temperatures, snow, freezing rain, sleet, and ice. When the project is completed the single-lane one-way traffic loop road should be an improvement to all the traffic it gets. And the new surface will be nice for all that fall foliage traffic soon to start in a couple of weeks.

The fall foliage 2021 predictions for this year are it should be a good year for leaf-peeping. This year should follow a typical peak fall foliage pattern for the mountains. There is already some minimal and patchy color being seen in the red maples, sassafrass and dogwood trees. The highest elevations in the GSMNP will peak as early as late September!
