Tourism Back Up in the Great Smoky Mountains

A recent study on tourism in Sevier County shows the first part of 2013 there was an increase in tourism in the Great Smoky Mountains area. The study also confirms the government shutdown did negatively affect tourism the first 2 weeks of October during the shutdown but after reopening the Great Smoky Mountains National Park  tourism recovered. Elk and Photographer Go Head to Head in Cataloochee Valley in Great Smoky Mountains

An elk and a photographer go head to head in Cataloochee Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains. The young bull elk walked up to where the photographer was sitting talking pictures and started head butting with the photographer. It lasted several minutes. The man was not injured. Government Shutdown Had Devastating Impact on Great Smoky Mountains Association

The impact of the 16 day partial government shutdown in October had a devastating impact on Great Smoky Mountains Association. GSMA Director Terry Maddox said “GSMA lost more than $550,000 in revenue at our park stores.” During the partial government shutdown the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was closed to visitors during one of the busiest times of the year for the park.

Take a Trip and Hit the Road This Weekend!

Take a trip this weekend. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is open. The sun is going to be out all day Sunday- first time in 2 weeks! Pack the bags, grab the kids, grab the dog, and hit the road. The visitors centers are open, the picnic areas, the campground, even the bathrooms are open! Just get out there this weekend and enjoy it all. The fall foliage show is here and beautiful. Enjoy this weekend and be safe!

NC and TN Tourism Industry Trying to Get the Facts Out

The NC and TN tourism industry is trying hard to get the word out that there is still plenty to see and do in the Great Smoky Mountains and the surrounding areas despite of the government shutdown. Local chambers of commerce directors, visitors center staffers, waitresses, shop owners, and hotel workers want people to know the facts about what is and is not closed. The Blue Ridge Parkway is OPEN but the facilites and visitors centers are closed. About 50 couples planning to get married in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have to make other arrangements thanks to the Government Shutdown that has closed down all National Parks. Weddings in October during the fall foliage season is very popular but about 50 couples that have wedding plans in the Great Smoky Mountains for this month may have to make other arrangements if the Government Shutdown continues.

Black Bear in Gatlinburg Causes Excitement Using Pedestrian Cross Walk Downtown Video of a bear crossing the street in downtown Gatlinburg goes viral. A black bear in downtown Gatlinburg made quite a spectecle as it roamed the streets recently.It was spotted making its way from the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park and into downtown Gatlinburg.
